Flatmate/Housemate Commandments

Since posting my freshers post I’ve been inspired to write a few more posts dedicated to those yet to embark on their first year of university. For me, moving in with complete strangers was a very overwhelming thought. At the time I had so many things running through my mind.. What will they be like? What if they don’t like me? Would we get on?

Looking back at it now, it wasn’t all that bad. We were all in the same situation, all new and had never spent more than 2 weeks away from home. But one thing I learnt very quickly was that in order to maintain good friendships with your housemates some household commandments must be set and adhered to.

In no particular order, here are some commandments which I believe to be safe proof, minimising the chances of any tension within the house, after all, university is meant to be an enjoyable experience for all.

Commandment I : Thou Shall Respect Each Other

When at university you will meet a range of people, who may have different beliefs, interests and practices from yourself. It’s important to be mindful and respectful to everyone you encounter, but more so your flatmates. After a long day of lectures and possibly working you want to know that the place you lay your head to rest is one of comfort and not torture. And as an advocate of positive vibes respect helps to ensure a positive and peaceful home environment.

Commandment II : Thou Shall Not Borrow Anything Without Asking

You may quickly develop a good relationship with your flatmates, they may even be your uni family, but never overstep boundaries. It all boils down to respect, if you want to borrow or use something simply ask, and never take anything for granted! Equally, be the one to lend too after all sharing is caring.

Commandment III : Thou Shall Contribute Towards Cleaning

In life there are messy people and there are neat freaks, no matter which side of the scale you sit it is important that you do your part towards the upkeep and maintain of the flat. It has to be done so I say get cracking. Personally, I think it’s great to establish a rota from the get go, that way every one knows the responsibilities and when they need to do it.

Commandment IV : Thou Shall Communicate

Communication is key! If you’re thinking of having friends over for pre drinks to having your girlfriend stay over it’s important to discuss and let your flatmates know.

Commandment V : Thou Shall Spend Time Together

You’ll be spending a whole academic year with one another so it’s important to spend some quality time with each other and get to know each flatmate. Now, I’m not saying you have to be joined to the hip, but it’s nice to know the people you’re living with. You never know, they may become lifelong friends.

What commandments will you be living by? What commandments did you live by?
